ALBC Priority - Watch: Fewer than 5,000 breeding birds in the United States, with ten or fewer primary breeding flocks, and globally endangered.
These ornamental bantams are great pets, and popular show choices. Easy to raise, they do very well on free range or in confinement situations. These perky birds have a bright red rose comb that (in the roosters) is spangled with small spikes as seen in the photo gallery, with the hen's comb being smaller than the male's, and smoother. The rooster's wattles are large and impressive, while the female's comb and wattles are rather insignificant. Their plumage is pure in color, with black edging around each individual feather, creating a striking effect. Sebrights hold their tails at a jaunty angle, and their downward-pointing wings give them an active look. Shanks and feet are a slate blue/gray. Appearing in several different colors, the most common varieties are Silver Laced and Golden Laced, with the Buff Laced being an extremely rare variety we also carry. In Europe, they are commonly bred in solid colors such as white or black, but none of these solid color Sebrights exist in the United States. Males are "hen feathered", which means their hackle (neck) feathers are not pointed like other breeds', but are rounded at the ends.
Sebrights, being an active breed, are good flyers, making them ideal for outdoor situations where the often perch in trees at night, away from predators. They are one of the first breeds to be standardized, with a breed registry going as far back as the 19th century, after the breed was established in 1810. The American Poultry Association accepted them to its standard of perfection in 1874.
Sebright hens produce for a short time in the spring and summer, often giving 2-3 eggs in a week during lay times. They can be encouraged to set by trapnesting for the first few days after the eggs are layed. Once hatched, the chicks need immediate care, as they tend to be smaller than the average bantam for the first week. Placing pebbles in the water or using a nipple waterer will be very helpful in reducing losses.
This breed is definitely worth the time and effort put into the show specimens. A popular 4-H, scout, and FFA project. Try some of these the next time you order from us!
